How do you measure AI visibility?

Four numbers: how many of your target questions name you across assistants, your position at multiple points on a map grid, actions taken from your Google profile, and which of your pages get cited. Everything else is decoration.

Prompt coverage

Pick five to ten questions real customers ask. Run each three times in each assistant, on the same day each month, with location stated. Record how many runs name you.

Three runs matters. The same question returns different businesses on different attempts, so a single test tells you almost nothing.

Grid position, not a single rank

"We rank number two" is meaningless for a business with a service area. You rank differently on every block. A 25 or 49 point grid shows where you are invisible, which is usually the suburb you most want.

Profile actions

Calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Google Business Profile. This is the closest thing to a revenue number in local search, and it moves before rankings do.

Citations of your own pages

When an assistant names you, note whether it cites your site, your profile, or a directory. Pages that get cited share traits - a direct opening, real figures - and that tells you what to write next.

The short version

  • Run every prompt three times, same day each month
  • Use a grid, not a single rank
  • Profile actions are the closest proxy for booked work
  • Track which pages get cited, then write more like them

Related questions

Are there tools for this?

Grid tracking is a mature market. AI mention tracking is young; several tools exist and vary in accuracy.

Why not just track traffic?

An AI answer can send zero clicks and still win the customer. Traffic alone will understate the effect.

What is a good result?

Improvement against your own baseline. Absolute numbers mean little across different markets.
