How do you rank in the Google map pack?

Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your customers closer, so the work is relevance - categories, services and content that match the search - and prominence, which is mostly reviews, consistent data and being mentioned elsewhere on the web.

Relevance: the part you control most directly

Primary category, secondary categories, your services list, your business description, and the content on your site. If someone searches for a service you offer but have never listed, you are not relevant to it in Google's eyes.

Distance: the part you cannot

Proximity to the searcher is heavily weighted and it is why your rank differs street by street. This is also why a single "we rank #2" figure is misleading, and why grid reports exist.

Prominence: reputation, roughly

Review count and rating, how often you are mentioned across the web, and consistency of your details. This builds slowly and is the hardest part for a competitor to copy quickly.

What moves the needle in practice

Fix the category. Fill the services list. Get reviews weekly rather than in bursts. Remove duplicate listings. Publish a page for each service and each area you genuinely serve. In that order.

The short version

  • Relevance, distance and prominence, in Google's own framing
  • Distance is fixed - stop trying to optimize it
  • Rank differs street by street; use a grid to see it
  • Categories and services list are the fastest relevance levers

Does a keyword in my business name help?

How much do reviews matter?

A lot for prominence, and recency counts as well as volume.
