Is GEO worth it for a small business?

It depends on what a customer is worth to you and how long you can wait. If one retained customer covers a month or two of fees, and you can give it six months, the math usually works. If you need leads this week, it does not - spend that money on ads.

Do the math on one customer

Take your average job value, multiply by how many times a typical customer returns, and add referrals. A dentist or a plumber with repeat custom often lands at several thousand dollars per customer.

Against a $500 to $1,200 monthly fee, one or two new customers a month is the break-even. Judge the plausibility of that number for your market, not the fee in isolation.

Who it works well for

Urgent trades where people ask in plain language and call the first credible name. Considered local services where a shortlist gets made before anyone calls. Any business with a constraint customers search on - open Saturday, takes this insurance, handles this brand.

Who should wait

Anyone who needs revenue within a fortnight. Businesses with no service area and no reviews to build on. Anyone whose fundamental problem is that the phone gets answered badly - fix that first, because more calls into a broken process just costs more.

And anyone who cannot commit six months. Stopping at month three means paying for setup and leaving before the payoff.

The compounding argument

Reviews and consistent history accumulate. A business eighteen months into this is genuinely hard to displace, which is the real reason to start earlier than feels comfortable.

The short version

  • Break-even is usually one to two new customers a month
  • Give it six months or do not start
  • Best fit: urgent trades and considered local services
  • Fix how calls are handled before buying more of them
