Does AI-written content hurt your rankings?
Google judges quality, not authorship. AI-written content is not penalized for being AI-written. It usually fails anyway, because unedited output contains nothing a model does not already know - and that is precisely the content AI systems skip when choosing what to cite.
What the guidance says
Google has been explicit: how content is produced matters less than whether it is helpful, original and demonstrates real experience. Mass-produced content made primarily to rank is the target, whoever or whatever produced it.
Why unedited output fails
A model generating an article about drain cleaning writes what it already knows. Another model reading that article learns nothing new, so has no reason to cite it over anything else.
The value you have is what no model knows: your prices this year in your city, what goes wrong on these jobs, what customers always get wrong when they call. That has to come from a person.
A workflow that works
Use AI for research, structure and a first draft. Then have someone who does the work add the specifics, cut the generic paragraphs, and correct what is wrong. The result is faster than writing from scratch and passes the only test that matters.
The tells to remove
Sentences that could appear on any competitor's site. Lists of benefits with no numbers. Confident claims about your own business that nobody verified. Those are what make a page read as machine-made, not the fact that a machine helped.
