Does schema markup help with AI search?

It helps, indirectly but genuinely. Schema states your facts in a form that cannot be misread - name, hours, services, prices, questions and answers. It does not guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity, and ambiguity is what makes systems skip you.

What it actually does

Your page says "open late." Schema says openingHours. One requires interpretation; the other does not. When a system has to choose between a business whose facts it is sure about and one it is guessing at, structured data is the difference.

Which types a local business needs

LocalBusiness or the more specific subtype for your trade, with address, hours, phone and service area. Organization with your logo and sameAs links to your profiles. Service for each service page. FAQPage where you have genuine questions and answers. BreadcrumbList for structure.

That is the whole list for most businesses. Everything beyond it is diminishing returns.

What it will not do

It will not make thin content rank, will not force a rich result, and is not a ticket into an AI answer. It is hygiene that makes everything else legible.

Getting it right

Mark up what is actually on the page. Marking up prices you do not display, or FAQs that are not visible, breaks Google's guidelines and can earn a manual action. Validate with the Rich Results Test after deploying.

The short version

  • LocalBusiness, Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList
  • Schema removes ambiguity rather than adding ranking power
  • Only mark up content visible on the page
  • Validate with Google's Rich Results Test

Related questions

JSON-LD or microdata?

JSON-LD. It is Google's stated preference and far easier to maintain.

Do AI systems read schema directly?

Some do; others read the rendered page. Either way it makes the facts unambiguous.

Can I add schema without a developer?

Most site builders have plugins. Validate the output - many generate invalid markup.
