How do you remove a fake Google review?
Report it for policy violation, be specific about which policy it breaks, and reply publicly in the meantime. Google removes reviews that break its rules - spam, conflicts of interest, off-topic content, personal attacks - but not reviews that are merely unfair or from a customer you dispute.
What actually gets removed
Spam and fake engagement. Reviews from competitors or former employees. Off-topic content unrelated to the customer experience. Harassment, hate speech, or personal information. Reviews for the wrong business.
"They're lying" is not a category. If the reviewer was a customer and had a bad time, it stays.
How to report it well
Flag the review in your profile and name the specific policy. Vague reports fail. If you can show the account has reviewed several competitors or has no other activity, say so.
One report per review. Repeated reporting does not escalate it.
Reply while you wait
Removal takes days to weeks and often does not happen. A calm public reply - "we have no record of this job; please contact us so we can look into it" - is read by every future customer, and it works even if the review never goes.
If the report fails
You can escalate through Google's business support, and there is a small-claims route for genuine defamation in some jurisdictions. Both are slow. Usually the better answer is to bury it under recent, genuine reviews.
The short version
- Report against a specific policy, not general unfairness
- Competitor and ex-employee reviews are removable
- "Unfair but genuine" reviews stay
- Reply publicly regardless of the outcome
