What is NAP consistency and does it still matter?
NAP is your name, address and phone number, and consistency means they are identical everywhere they appear. It always mattered a little for rankings. It matters much more now, because contradictory data is the main reason an AI answer hedges instead of recommending you.
What inconsistency looks like
An old phone number on a directory you forgot. A suite number present in some places and absent in others. "Northline Plumbing LLC" here and "Northline Plumbing" there. Hours that were right in 2021.
Each on its own is trivial. Together they make a machine uncertain which record refers to which business.
Why it costs more in an AI answer
A ranking algorithm quietly discounts you. A language model does something more visible: it hedges. "You may want to confirm details directly with the business" is what uncertainty sounds like, and it is the sentence that loses the call.
Where to fix it
Google Business Profile first, then Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, the major directories in your trade, your own website footer, and your social profiles. Then the smaller aggregators that feed everything else.
Pick one canonical version of each field, write it down, and use exactly that everywhere.
Keeping it fixed
It drifts. Numbers change, offices move, someone updates one platform and not the others. Audit twice a year at minimum.
The short version
- Name, address, phone - identical everywhere
- Inconsistency makes AI answers hedge
- Fix Google, Apple, Bing, trade directories, your own site
- Re-audit at least twice a year

What about a tracking phone number?
