Why isn't my business showing up in ChatGPT?

Almost always one of six things: the assistant has no location to work from, your Google profile is thin, your facts contradict each other across the web, you have too few recent reviews, your site never states the specifics a model can quote, or a competitor simply documents themselves better. None of these are penalties. They are gaps.

Check it properly first

Before diagnosing anything, ask the way a customer would. Not your business name - that proves nothing. Ask the problem: "who can fix a leaking water heater tonight in Tulsa?" Add your city explicitly, because the API and the app infer location differently.

Run it three times. Assistants return different businesses on different runs, so a single miss is noise. Three misses is a pattern.

The six reasons, in the order they usually apply

Your Google profile is thin. No services listed, wrong primary category, no hours. This is the most common and the most fixable. A model reaching for verified local facts reaches here first.

Your facts disagree. Different phone numbers across directories make a model hedge instead of recommend. Hedging sounds like "you may want to confirm directly with the business."

Your reviews are old. A strong average from 2022 reads as a business that may have changed hands. Recency carries weight that volume alone does not.

Your site says nothing specific. Models quote numbers, hours, prices and response times. Adjectives give them nothing to lift.

You do the service but never published it. If slab leak detection isn't on your profile or your site, you are not a candidate for that question.

A competitor is simply better documented. Often a smaller business with a complete profile and a published price list.

What to fix first

Profile before content, always. Categories, services and hours take an afternoon and are the input most assistants weight highest. Content is worth more over time but takes months to be re-crawled and absorbed.

Then reviews, because they compound and nothing you do later replaces the time they take.

The short version

  • Ask the question a customer would ask, not your business name
  • Run each prompt three times before drawing a conclusion
  • Fix your Google Business Profile before you write a word of content
  • Expect two to four months before new work shows up in AI answers

Related questions

Is being missing from ChatGPT a penalty?

No. There is no penalty system. You are either present in the sources a model draws on, or you are not.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

Not in the organic answer itself. Some assistants are testing ads, but the recommendation text is not for sale today.

How fast can this change?

Profile fixes can show in the map pack within six to ten weeks. AI answers lag, usually two to four months, because models refresh on their own schedule.
