Does GEO replace SEO?

No. They share a foundation and target different moments. SEO works to win a click on a results page. GEO works to be named in the answer when no results page appears. The same clean profile, consistent data and specific content serve both, which is why doing them separately wastes money.

What actually changed

The middle step disappeared for a chunk of searches. Someone used to type two words, scan ten links and pick one. Now they describe a problem in a sentence and get a paragraph naming one or two businesses.

You cannot compete for a click that never happens. You can compete to be the sentence.

Where the two differ

SEO optimizes for a page that ranks and earns a click: title tags, links, keyword targeting. GEO optimizes for a passage that can be lifted: answer-first structure, stated numbers, unambiguous facts in structured data.

GEO also weights sources differently. Your Google Business Profile and your reviews carry far more influence in an AI answer than they ever did in a blue-link ranking.

Where they are the same

Crawlable pages, accurate business data, real content that answers a question, and technical hygiene. Anyone selling GEO as an entirely new discipline with no relationship to SEO is overselling.

The short version

  • SEO wins a click; GEO wins a mention
  • Both rest on the same foundation of clean, consistent data
  • Profile and reviews carry more weight in GEO than in classic SEO
  • Doing them as separate projects duplicates the same underlying work

Related questions

Should I fire my SEO agency?

No. Ask whether they are tracking AI mentions and structuring content to be quoted. If not, that is the gap to fill.

Will blue links disappear?

Unlikely soon. Plenty of searches still end in a click. The mix is shifting, not flipping.

Which matters more for a local business?

The map pack still books more jobs today. AI mentions are growing. Fixing the profile improves both.
