How many Google Business Profile categories should you use?

One primary, and only the secondary categories describing services you genuinely provide and want calls for. Google allows up to nine additional categories. Most businesses do best with three to five. Adding everything dilutes relevance rather than multiplying it.

What secondary categories actually do

They make you eligible for additional searches, at a lower weight than your primary. A plumber who adds "Drainage service" can appear for drain queries without weakening their standing on plumbing ones - provided they really do that work.

The dilution problem

Adding categories you do not serve, or that sit far from your primary, muddies what your business is. It also risks calls you cannot fulfil, which produces the worst possible outcome: a bad review for something you never offered.

A rule for deciding

Add a secondary category if you would happily take the job tomorrow, you can point to the service on your website, and it is listed in your services menu. If any of those three is false, leave it out.

Keep it aligned with the rest

Categories, your services list, and your website should all describe the same business. Alignment across those three is what makes a model confident enough to name you.

The short version

  • One primary, three to five secondaries for most businesses
  • Google permits up to nine additional categories
  • Only add work you would take tomorrow
  • Categories, services list and website should agree

Will more categories rank me for more?

Rarely. Relevance is diluted and you can lose ground on the searches that matter.

Can I change secondaries freely?

More safely than the primary, but still space out edits.

Do secondaries help in AI answers?
