How many local citations do you need to rank on Google Maps?

There is no number. Citations stopped being a volume game years ago - what counts is that the dozen or so sources Google and AI systems actually read all agree with each other. Twelve accurate listings beat three hundred sloppy ones, and buying bulk submissions is money set on fire.

What a citation is, and what changed

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another site - a directory, a chamber listing, a trade association, a supplier's dealer page.

A decade ago, volume moved rankings, which produced an industry selling five hundred submissions for $99. Google now weighs the credibility and consistency of sources far more than the count. Hundreds of listings on sites nobody visits add nothing, and if any of them carry an old phone number they actively cost you.

The ones that actually matter

The core data platforms: Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Facebook.

The big aggregators that feed everything downstream, which vary by country.

The reviews sites in your trade: Yelp, Angi, Healthgrades, Avvo, TripAdvisor - whichever applies to you.

Genuinely local sources: chamber of commerce, a supplier's installer list, a local news mention, your trade association directory.

That is usually twelve to twenty-five listings. Past that, returns fall off sharply.

Benchmark rather than guess

Look at the three businesses in your map pack and check where they appear. That is your target set. In a small town it might be fifteen sources; in a competitive city, forty. The list matters more than the number.

Why consistency beats count for AI answers

A language model comparing sources treats disagreement as unreliability. One directory with your old suite number can be the difference between a confident recommendation and a hedge like "you may want to confirm directly with the business."

This is why cleaning up twenty listings usually outperforms adding two hundred.

The short version

  • No threshold number exists - stop counting
  • Twelve to twenty-five quality sources covers most local businesses
  • Consistency across sources beats volume of sources
  • Bulk submission packages are the most common wasted spend in local SEO

Related questions

Do citations still affect Google Maps rankings?

They contribute to prominence, but as a supporting signal. Categories, reviews and proximity carry far more weight.

Should I buy a citation building package?

No. Most create listings on sites with no traffic and no authority, and they are hard to correct later.

How often should I audit them?

Twice a year, and immediately after any change of address, phone number or business name.
