Why do AI answers name a different business each time?

Because these systems are probabilistic, not lookup tables. The same question can retrieve slightly different sources, and the model samples between plausible answers. Location, phrasing, conversation history and the time of day all shift the result.

The four things that move an answer

Sampling. Models choose between plausible next words rather than one fixed output. Run the same prompt twice and you can get two valid answers.

Retrieval. Live search results change hourly. Different sources retrieved means different businesses considered.

Location. The apps infer where you are. Two people on the same street can get different lists.

Phrasing. "Best plumber" and "emergency plumber" pull different candidate sets.

What this means for tracking

Never draw a conclusion from one run. Test three times and report a frequency - "named in two of three runs" - which is both more honest and more useful, because it can improve over time.

It also means nobody can guarantee a mention. Anyone who does is either misinformed or selling something.

What you can control

Not the output. Only the odds. The more consistently you are documented, reviewed and specific, the more often you land in the candidate set and the more often you are named.

The short version

  • Same question, different answer, is normal
  • Test three times and report the frequency
  • Location and phrasing shift results as much as the model does
  • You control your odds of being named, not the output

Related questions

Is my competitor doing something clever?

Usually not. They are usually just better documented.

Does asking in a new chat change it?

Yes. Conversation history influences answers, so test in a fresh session each time.

Will this settle down?

Some. Grounding in live search is making answers more consistent, but variance is inherent to how these models work.
