How do you get into Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews mostly summarize pages already ranking well for the query, plus local business data from Maps. So the entry ticket is conventional: rank on page one, then structure the page so a specific passage is easy to lift - a direct answer in the opening sentence and clear question-shaped headings.
It is not a separate ranking system
Overviews draw heavily on results Google already surfaces. If you are on page four, an overview is not a shortcut. Fix the ranking first, then the format.
Format for extraction
Answer in the first sentence under each heading, then explain. Use headings phrased as the question. Keep paragraphs short enough to be lifted whole.
Include the specifics people are actually asking about: cost ranges, timeframes, what is included, what disqualifies someone.
For local queries, the profile is doing the work
On "near me" style questions, overviews lean on Maps data. Category, services, hours and reviews decide whether you appear, more than anything on your website.
Accept the trade
Being included can reduce clicks - the answer is on the results page. For a local service business that usually still pays, because the customer calls rather than browses.
The short version
- Overviews summarize pages that already rank
- Answer first, explain second, under every heading
- Local overviews lean on Google Business Profile data
- Inclusion can cost clicks and still win calls

Can I opt out?
There is a nosnippet meta tag, but using it usually costs more than it saves.
Does structured data get me in?
It is not a direct ticket. It helps Google understand the page, which helps everything else.
Why did I appear and then disappear?
Overviews are volatile and Google adjusts when they trigger. Do not read a single week as a trend.
